Here Comes Everybody is a 30 minute film/video freakout that will shatter your consensus reality into pieces.

Producer, curator and filmmaker, Will Erokan, has a long history of putting together Cable Access shows and this is his latest project.

Erokan said he came up with the idea for the show while strolling near the beautiful L.A. River:

“I had just left a gallery in LA, watching The Caged Pillows… I was trying to locate my wife’s car, which I borrowed to go see the movie… At some point, while wandering aimlessly near the LA River, I had the idea…. I could find artists via Facebook, and build a monthly show.”

It has worked. The monthly show features subversive and experimental films from all over the United States and submissions are growing.

Erokan said HCE serves as a vehicle to bring experimental work into the living rooms of Americans.

“People are used to seeing subversive content on the internet. But TV for the most part is a safe space
controlled by corporations. What I like about Cable Access, is your show works like a trap. The viewer flips through the channels and suddenly they come across something new…”

Here Comes Everybody currently screens in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, but the plan is national reach with Seattle and Olympia coming on board next and Portland and somewhere in Texas on the horizon.

Where to watch

LA36 – Channel 36. Time: Check programming schedule.

Berkeley Community Media – Channel 28 and 33. Time: Check programming schedule.

Experimental and avant-garde filmmakers have always had trouble reaching larger audiences due to their work rejecting mainstream tastes and instead reaching for new creative frontiers that tend to confound the average viewer.

YouTube is a cesspool of garbage and throwing up an art video on that platform is akin to throwing a quality painting into a landfill and hoping somebody possessing artistic refinement finds it. Vimeo has largely been a home for experimental films, but the native traffic is scant making it hard for films to get exposure.

Enter Instagram, creating the right ecosystem for the subversive and strange with their tagging system (all videos have a chance to be found) and their max video length set at 60-seconds making even the most challenging films accessible to short-term attention span society.

We’ll add to the list of filmmakers as we find them, but two stand outs are Kelly Broich (Collapse Productions) and Eli Elliott.

Kelly Broich:

Artists McCarthy and Kelley re-stage classic 1970s performance pieces by Vito Acconci, with a decidedly ironic Southern California sensibility. States McCarthy: “[The piece] is a reference to art now, to a resurgence of the 1970s and an interest in youth in the art world. There are also references to Hollywood 8 movies and soft porn made in the Hollywood hills… In Fresh Acconci, the New York art scene is sandwiched with Hollywood. Two kinds of aesthetics overlap. The tape itself crosses lines of what is politically correct, exploitation and softening or obscuring the meaning.”

Based on Videotapes by Vito Acconci: “Claim Excerpts” (’71) “Contacts” (’71) “Focal Points” (’71)”Pryings” (’71) “Theme Song” (’73) Featuring: Nancy Paradis, Andre Paradis, Roosevelt Flenourg, Heather Kennedy. Directors: Paul McCarthy, Mike Kelley. Producers: Steve Cioffi, Scott Hopper. Director of Photography: Ken Marcus. Lighting Assistants: Leonard Kuperstein, Jeffrey Dean Zawitkoski.
